I am a long-time educator and organizer in Chicago with a proven track record for instigating and sustaining social change efforts, community economic development programs and grassroots organizing projects. I'm working on my 13th nonprofit enterprise - the CivicLab - as a social enterprise. The CivicLab will be a store front space where educators and activists meet technologists and designers to build tools that accelerate civic engagement and community improvement efforts. We will conduct original research, teach classes on civic skills, conduct ongoing investigations of local government and build "Apps/Hacks for Activists" that solve problems that community organizers routinely encounter. Our first project is the Tax Increment Finance (TIF) Report that investigates and illuminated the TIF program in Chicago - which diverted $455 million in property taxes in 2011 into 163 hard-to-penetrate accounts.
